Survival Tips for Students of Color
Attending college can be exciting, challenging and stress filled for every student. Sometimes it may seem that everything about life is uncertain, changing, and growing. Often, there are academic, social, financial, and family pressures. Just when one round of finals and/or papers are over, another semester begins.
For students who have the experience of being different from the "mainstream," negotiating the challenges and reaching graduation day can be even more difficult. In our work with students of color, students with disabilities, first generation college students, international students and gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and questioning students we are constantly reminded that:
- The campus community needs to continue to develop resources to make education equally accessible to all people.
- All of us have a responsibility to make our community safe for and welcoming of all its members.
- Developing strong relationships with peers and others on and off campus is a key strategy in maintaining perspective and keeping focused.
- Taking advantage of support services on campus can really make a difference in a student's success at UNH.
UNH values the benefits reaped by a diverse student population. As a result our relatively homogeneous student body is becoming increasingly more diverse. However, some students of color may feel isolated and find it difficult to cope in this environment. The following tips are offered to provide students of color suggestions to help them better adjust to life at UNH.
- Get involved in campus organizations to meet people.
- Meet with your professors to ask questions and get to know them.
- Identify and utilize the support services at UNH including the Office of Student Multicultural Affairs, The Connect Program for 1st year and transfer students of color, the Counseling Center, Health Services, University Advising and Career Center, and the Office of Provost/Diversity Initiatives
- Identify and utilize the academic support services such as the Center for Academic Resources and the Robert J. Connors Writing Center.
Participate in the support groups like the International Students & Scholars and Brothers and Sisters
