Staff
David M.J. Cross, Ph.D.
Director
After growing up in Pennsylvania near Philadelphia, David went to the University of Minnesota on a tennis scholarship where he received his B.A. in psychology. David went on to The Ohio State University for graduate work in Counseling Psychology and received his Ph.D. He began his professional career as a staff psychologist at the UNH Counseling Center and spent twelve years in this position before becoming Director/Chief Psychologist. As Director, David's interests center on outreach, consultation, and crisis intervention, especially suicide assessment and prevention. His counseling approach is humanistic and relational with psychodynamic influence. He has worked with students who have a wide range of difficulties--anxiety, stress disorders, eating problems, suicidal history, problem drinking and depression. Sports psychology is a special interest of David's, especially clinical issues that affect an athlete's performance on and off the field. David has over twenty years experience as a psychologist and is licensed in the state of New Hampshire.
David thoroughly enjoys working with the diversity a college campus provides. Most recently he has been an active member of the Division of Student Affairs Diversity Team and the Presidential Commission on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Concerns whose responsibility is to enhance the recruitment and retention of under represented groups at UNH. David was very honored to receive a Pink Triangle Award in 2003 and the Kidder Award in 2005 for his dedicated work with the LGBT community. Bringing more diverse students, faculty and staff to the University and supporting them while they are here remains a high priority for David and the Center.
David continues his involvement with tennis by playing and coaching in the New England area. He maintains his own sense of well being by staying active (tennis, basketball, golf, cycling, etc.) and spending lots of time with his family.
